Hey Folks:

I had a mid mounted PTO installed in my JD770 anticipating getting a front mounted snow blower. Ever since, the FEL loader bucket hydraulics have been sticky. When I tilt the bucket it sometimes snags in one position, until I release the hyd lever and try it again. The dealer who did the PTO install went out of business, so I can't pursue that end. I checked the hyd fluid, and it was overfilled, so I removed over a quart to bring it back to a normal level - no effect on the problem. The machine only has 100 hours on it and is very well maintained. Any ideas?

Also, I'm looking for a front mounted snow blower - has anyone found an aftermarket source for these, or any line on a used one? JD wants $4K for their unit. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

John

John, I can't think of any connection between the installation of your mid pto and the loader problem. All of the linkages involved with mid pto is on the left side of the tractor, and loader controls are on the right. Does the loader control lever feel normal? Does the bucket stick when dumping or rolling back or both? With a loaded bucket or empty? Do the hydraulics make a hissing noise when the bucket sticks? Does the engine labor? Do the cylinder rods look straight when the bucket is tilted all the way out? Kenny ....

JD's questions are good ones to answer. I'd also check out if the 3ph works normally and maybe do a pressure test.

However, I just had a really dumb thought, so I'll ask a really dumb question. Is there any chance that the mid-PTO actually is a hydraulic motor? Continuing with dumbness, I guess a 770 doesn't have an HST option so that couldn't be a link between the hydraulic and pto systems.

I guess I'm wondering this stuff, because adding a mid-pto seems like a lot of new stuff. Maybe JD uses the same cases etc. for all 770's with or without an option, in which case it would be just a matter of plugging in the parts. Otherwise, it would seem like half-the tractor would have to be replaced to add a mid-pto. Anyway, too bad about the dealer, but you might check further if this fixing this problem is likely to get expensive. A person can’t necessarily just shut down a business and walk away from all liability. There might be a remedy available.

Thanks to Tom and JD for the good observations and questions. The hydraulic system seems to work fine, there is no hissing or engine strain. The cylinders look good and straight, and there is no mechanical sticking point which I could find. The bucket just sticks a little in either tilt direction, regardless of the load. The control lever feels normal, and its not a great problem, as moving the lever to center and back frees it up. It just interferes with the smooth flow of things, and I worry about it becoming a greater problem. The only thing unusual about the tractor when I got it back from the mid-PTO install was the hyd fluid was way over-filled, and at first I thought that this was the problem. But after sucking out 1 1/2 quarts of fluid and returning the level to a little high on the dip stick, nothing changed. Any other ideas are appreciated. Also, I'm still trying to find a good deal on a front mounted snow blower for my JD770. ....

Well I'l do the limb trick. When you use the dump circuit, lever to the right? It has a regular circuit and a fast circuit. If you move the lever a little to the right it will slow dump and move it ALL the way to the right it will fast dump. The inbetween is the weird ground sometimes the bucket will hang, stick not move then all of a sudden it will. Hopefully this helps. ....

A common cause for an over-filled sump is checking it when the loader and maybe the 3ph as well are full up. The sump would be low. If it was topped up, then it probably will read high the next time it's checked.

Possibly the dealer topped it up. I know my tire pressures are always different when I get the tractor back from my dealer. The mechanics seem to think I need pressures that my 20-lbs. gauge won't read because I have a loader.

I had some hydraulic system hang-ups sort of like were described and included the 3ph as well. I found that they cleared up sometimes after I jiggled and fiddled with the valves. I have three in-line valves rather than a joystick. These hydraulic peculiarities virtually went away after I changed the oil and filter.

Harvey
I have a JD 855 that acts the same as yours. If you move the lever slittly forward or back as you hold it to the right it dumps.
I'm getting used to it.
